Robbie Cooper’s Alter Ego project (under the broader Simulations project) is a fun look at people’s video game avatar selves. Some of the virtualizations are completely unexpected, and some are no different from real life.
Alter Ego recalls Shauna Frischkorn’s Game Boys photos, which capture the faces of young men frozen in moments of intense game-playing stupor. Some of their slack, absent expressions are eerie, but I think there’s something inherently humorous in both projects.
I don’t know whether to laugh or shudder when I mentally combine the two projects, when I imagine the liquid-dessert slurping Asian man living vicariously through his anime girl avatar with a rapturous look of concentration.
